Clear skies, a snow-free road, and the temptation of chocolate chip cookies brought out more than 40 runners Saturday morning for the Two Street Station Chocolate Chip Cookie Challenge Race.

Glenn Thompson cruised to a first place victory in the men's field with a time of 40 minutes and 13 seconds. He was followed by cycling sensation Rocky Reifenstuhl almost a minute later, who placed second with a time of 41:12. Ken Leary took third with a time of 41:48.

Michelle Mitchell led the women's division and placed fifth overall with a time of 42:06, a second behind men's fourth place finisher Marshall Heaster. Jane Lanford finished second for the women with a time of 46:43, while Kim Simpson finished third with 47:48.

The 6.5 mile course started and ended at the UAF Patty Center. The top three finishers in both divisions received a dozen chocolate chip cookies from Two Street Station. Race director Scott McCrea said this would be the last year a local runner would win the race, as word of the race's prizes has reached the Kenyans.

"They're tired of coming to America and winning road races that pay about $20,000," said McCrea. "They've heard about how good the cookies are in this race, and are ready to accept the challenge next year." The next race on the running calendar is the Red Ribbon Run, which will be held at the Melawin Gym on Ft. Wainright, October 24, at 9a.m.
