Tour de Murphy Dome
rare that a girl beats all the guys in a running race, but on Sunday at
the 4th Tour de Murphy Dome,
Laura Brosius and Molly Yazwinski each accomplished the feat.
Brosius, a UAF graduate student and
the 2008 Equinox Marathon champ, pulled away from
Yazwinski on the final 1.5-mile climb to win the 7.8-mile event in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 35 seconds.
Yazwinski, who is now attending veterinary school in New York but has returned to Fairbanks for
part of the summer, followed 23 seconds later.
Brosius and Yazwinski each passed
Andy Holland — who had grabbed the lead after blowing past
the midway aid station — on the final climb. Simon McLoughlin finished third in 1:06:18, while Holland
(1:07:02) and Jack Stratton (1:10:28) completed the top five.
Conditions were ideal with warm
weather, good visibility and minimal wind for the 22 participants,
who negotiated stretches of tundra, four-wheeler-width trail, dirt roads and even a couple of snow
patches on the challenging course that began and ended at the top of Murphy Dome
20 miles northwest of Fairbanks.
