Molly Yazwinski was
the third woman to reach the summit of Moose Mountain,
but she returned first to the base lodge on Tuesday night to win the 2nd
Masochism on Moose Mountain event.Yazwinski needed 21 minutes, 40
seconds
to top out after a steep 1.25-mile ski hill climb that gained 1,400
vertical feet and
involved plenty of power hiking. Melissa Lewis arrived first in 19:55
and Kristen
Rozell was next in 20:34.But early during the 2.75-mile gradual
descent, Lewis
temporarily lost the trail and Yazwinski took advantage, cruising to
the fastest
descent and finishing in 38:44. Yazwinski’s mark was nearly five
minutes faster
than her third-place result in 2008. Rozell was second in 39:01 and
Lewis took
third in 39:40.
For the men, Mike
Kramer gapped Matias Saari and Kevin Brinegar near the top
of the climb and held the advantage by descending at a sub-5-minute per
mile pace
to win in 30 minutes, 4 seconds. Saari finished in 30:20 and Brinegar
took third in
30:30.
Seventeen-year-old Zachariah Ginn (32:44), Frank Young (34:33) and Drew
Harrington (34:52) also each broke the previous year’s record of 35:35.
Forty-seven people,
including 72-year-old Jim Cavanaugh, participated in the
opening race of the 2009 Northern Trails Running Series.
