A Record Setting Day for Snowshoers

Fresh off her World Winter Triathlon Championship performance, Heather Best broke her own course record, while Kevin Brinegar tied the course record in the Fairbanks Snowshoe Classic held on the trails of UAF.  Best covered the 10K course in 54:11 to better her 2007 course record by 49 seconds.  Ashley Feaver finished a close 2nd in 55:16 while Elizabeth Anderson finished 3rd in 64:49.

Five time Equinox marathon champion Kevin Brinegar took the lead in the men's race after 2K and went on to tie the course record of 44:28 set by Chad Carroll in 2007.  This victory capped off Brinegar's undefeated stellar snowshoe season and earned him his first Snowshoe Classic title after finishing runner-up the last 2 years.  Brinegar was briefly challenged by the 2008 Equinox marathon champion and snowshoe newcomer, Harald Aas.  Aas went on to finish 2nd in 46:12.  The real race of the day was for 3rd place between former Snowshoe Classic champions Chad Carroll and Bill McDonnell.  McDonnell's evenly paced first 5K allowed him make up ground on Carroll during the second half of the race.  McDonnell caught and passed Carroll at 9.5K but Carroll outkicked him in the last 100 meters to finish 3rd in 46:55.  McDonnell finished 4th in 47:04 and Max Kaufman was 5th in 48:33.

In the 5K, 16 year-old Nathaniel Burrell won the men's race in 22:56 while Maria Stensland, running in snowshoes for only the 2nd time, won the women's race in 27:20.  Burrell plans to race on March 8th in Oregon at the US National Snowshoe Championships to compete for the title of US Junior National Champion.

The Snowshoe Classic was also the final race in the Finnish Line Snowshoe Series.
Finnish Line Physical Therapy donated Northern Lites Snowshoes to the top 2 men and women in the series. Kevin Brinegar and Nathaniel Burrell won their respective age groups in every race to share the series title while Arnold Chingliak won his age group in 4 out of the 5 races to claim 3rd place.   53 year-old Jane Lanford became the new womens series champion by winning her age group in all four races that she competed in this season.  Elizabeth Anderson, the 2-time defending series champion, finished a close 2nd in the series.
