Please do not use the trails at Birch Hill Recreation Area yet. While there are a few dry spots, much of trails are really wet with some ice in the shady areas. In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and is predicting up to 4 inches of snow between tonight and Saturday morning. More precipitation (and less sun) will keep the trails soft and soggy. Using the trails now risks damaging them for the rest of the summer.
The Borough and Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks are monitoring the trails and will issue another report next week and let people know when the trails will be ready for use.
Also, please be careful using trails in other areas. Some are beginning to dry out while others are still really soft and muddy or even snow-covered. Trails on well-drained, south-facing slopes are your best bet.
